Cranes 5-1-2002

Cranes on their way to the Port of Oakland. In May 2002, we were hired to document the arrival of giant cranes under the Golden Gate Bridge into the bay, heading for their permanent home at the Port of Oakland, California. The ship carrying the cranes could lower itself, bringing its deck to sea level. As it approached the Bay Bridge, all vehicles on the bridge were stopped so that the ship and its tall cargo could pass under the bridge…barely. If you look carefully at the close-up image, you can see workmen at the tippy-top of the cranes reaching up just touching the bottom of the Bay Bridge.
